Will Coffee Break My Fast? Can You Drink Coffee While Intermittent Fasting?
With the popularity of intermittent fasting, conscious dieters are often left wondering if their favorite foods, drinks or supplements will break a fast. Can you even drink coffee while intermittent fasting?
Obviously that depends but if you want good news, I have it. Drinking coffee will not break a intermittent fast or fast of any kind,if it’s straight up black coffee (or tea). There’s a few exceptions that we’ll get in to.
Any amount of calories will break a fast. While some argue that full fat coconut milk or other fat dominant foods (heavy cream) are okay during a fast, the research is very clear that any calorie containing food will break a fast
Even butter, MCT oil, coconut oil or any other type of fat to make a bulletproof coffee or fatty drink. That’s not to say that those drinks don’t offer any benefit, you can load up your morning coffee with whatever you like provided that you are controlling calories during the day but these type of "super" coffees while intermittent fasting is a big no no.
Amino acids and fasting is another hot topic and as I have written about before, bcaas do not NOT break a fast or kick you out of ketosis. A full essential amino acid supplement or collagen powder will in fact interrupt a fast and “break it”.
That doesn’t mean that you can’t add anything to your coffee. Mushroom coffee has grown in popularity for the immune system and cellular health benefits of numerous mushroom extracts including reishi and lions maine. You can certainly add these mushrooms.
You can also add nutmeg and cinnamon as both of these herbs are calorie free and show an increased ability to improve insulin sensitivity.Fasting itself is known to increase insulin sensitivity so these herbs add an additional punch without enhancing your coffee to the point that it breaks a fast.
Stevia, which is the natural sweetener used in The Physique Formula BCAAS, has been shown in research to also improve blood sugar health and increase the growth of good gut bacteria. Since it’s calorie free, you can feel free to add it in your coffee as well. Monk fruit extract will also work.
In summary, as long as your coffee is black (or any unsweetened tea), you can feel confident to add some herbs and natural sweeteners into your coffee and it will not kick you out of a fast if you do not add any calories in.
