Crossfit Open 17.1 Workout Strategy

The 2017 Crossfit Games Open is here and that means a lot of hard training athletes are ready to push their limits, test their strengths and try to earn bragging rights at their local box for the year.

Not only is it a national competition where local athletes legitimately have a shot at making the games, it also puts a cap on these athletes training year. Unlike any other type of training, Crossfit athletes work all year to bring up weaknesses and optimize strengths and now is the time where they get to see what worked and what didn’t.

Without further ado, here’s Open Workout 17.1 and how I would tackle it.

 

The 17.1 Open Workout Is…

Couplet for time (20 minute time cap)

10 dumbell snatches 15 burpee box jump
20 dumbell snatches 15 burpee box jump
30 dumbell snatches 15 burpee box jump
40 dumbell snatches 15 burpee box jump
50 dumbell snatches 15 burpee box jump

Men Rx:
50lb DB

Womens Rx:
35lb DB

All of this with a 20 minute time cap!



My 17.1 Strategy To Dominate 17.1

  • 1: Don’t rest on the box! Burpee through
    As evident during the announcement workout, do not stop on the box jump. Do not try to stand up straight, stay down. The goal is for a consistent and frequent pace. Do not rest on the box

    2: Try to keep it tight
    With 150 DB snatches, you want to watch your form. do not just bend over and sling a weight up. Use your hips to explode up and drive with your hips.

    3: Conserve your energy
    Under that it’s a 20 minute time cap but don’t rush. Try to establish a good pace at the start then power through the last 5 minutes if needed.
