Subclinical Thyroid Numbers and Competing.
Recent studies show that subclinical, undiagnosed, hypothyroid disorders are more common than Type 2 diabetes. Let that sink in since we know that Type 2 diabetes is considered a health epidemic. So what do we call subclinical thyroid disorders?
When your doctor talks to you (or doesn’t) about your thyroid they are talking about certain biomarkers
TSH-thyroid stimulating hormone
T3 and T4-Your thyroid hormones.
TSH is a hormone secreted by your pituitary gland and it essentially signals your thyroid to produce a certain amount of thyroid hormone. This is based on the amount of thyroid hormone in your blood. If you are on thyroid med, your TSH will drop because your pituitary sees an increased amount. If you have low thyroid hormones in your blood, your TSH will be high.
While looking at T3 and T4 is helpful, it does not give a indicator of FREE T3 and T4 which is the ACTIVE thyroid hormone NOT bound by protein.
A subclinical thyroid disorder is defined by having a high TSH but T3 and T4 numbers in the normal ranges. Most doctors are baffled at this.
